About Clara

The voice behind the stories.

I’m Clara. Every week I tell children about someone who made history and turn it into stories they can’t stop thinking about. My first and toughest listeners: my own three children. By day I work in marketing. The podcast is my passion project.

How it all began

Told on the hiking trail

It all started on hikes with my three children. To make long walks feel shorter, I told them about people from history, especially brave women who often get too little space in school books.

The children always wanted more. So I recorded the stories. That became “Von Alexander bis Zarathustra”: a new episode every Monday, short enough for the way to school and exciting enough that children ask questions afterwards.

Background

What I bring

Classicist

Master’s degree in Classics with Latin and Ancient Greek. That’s where my love of the old stories comes from.

Theologian

Bachelor’s degree in Theology. Helpful for figures like Martin Luther, where faith and history are closely linked.

Antiquity and Middle Ages

My favourite eras. From Cleopatra to Joan of Arc: here I know the stories behind the stories.

Children’s author

I grew up in Potsdam and lived in Berlin for many years. I wrote the children’s book “Anna & Stella in Berlin” about the city, in German and in English.

Behind the scenes

How an episode is made

All from one hand: I research, write, narrate and design every episode myself.

  1. 1

    Research

Sources and specialist books. When something isn’t certain, I say so.

  2. 2

    Writing

The key facts, little stories and one detail hardly anyone knows.

  3. 3

    Recording

About 12 minutes, narrated by me.

  4. 4

    Quiz and picture

Cover, quiz questions and picture puzzle for the app.

Who should be next?

I love hearing ideas for new episodes, from children as much as from parents and teachers.
